"Beginner's Level - for Children Just Starting to Learn Yoga"This award winning Children's Yoga DVD is packed with children's yoga poses. If you aren't sure how kids do yoga it will give you a look at just what kids can do.
A Word of Caution: Use with supervision and good Padding!
Although this DVD says it is for Beginners from ages 3 to 8 years old, I have a word of caution: some of the poses may take a little more direction than what is given. I suggest to do it together with kids and adults as it shows at the beginning of the DVD.

Also balancing on you hands (crow - or quail in this DVD) with your feet up is pretty advanced for beginners and is only explained for a few seconds. Without good padding this can be dangerous for kids if they fall forward - so must be done with supervision. Kids can do these poses, and like them, as shown in the video, but I bet those kids have done those poses a number of times previously with good, safe instructions, which isn't depicted in the DVD. So be careful with this one.
Using Kids Yoga DVDs in the Classroom
When I did this video with the daycare kids the first time, we paused it a number of times. The video is very quick and the poses are done for around 20 seconds each. So for the first time many kids just watched some of the poses and did others. The DVD shows how kids don't need long instructions, they like to do what they see.

Occasionally I would pause the video for the yoga poses we knew and we would do them a little longer. Plus there were about 16 kids in the class who kept moving closer and closer to the screen so we paused often to space the kids out and give everyone a little more room.
The kids loved it though, they liked the fast pace and all the action.
Yoga for Kids - Kids' Style
When I first popped this DVD in the player I wasn't immediately captured with it. It is a style of TV show, along the lines of "Blues Clues" where the host talks to the children through the TV. What surprised me was how many children actually talked back to the TV.

The host, Rana Kirkland, seems to have a lot of experience with kids and a very professional manner. The kids found her engaging and listened to what she said. She had a caring and loving energy to her.
So I Can Do Yoga Beginners grew on me especially after I saw how much the kids enjoyed it.
Over 30 Yoga Poses in Under 25 Minutes
There is a lot of yoga here in one video! The poses are held for much shorter times than what I teach in a class, but it worked for the group with supervision. It would be good for kids to do more than once so that they could get to know each pose.

A is for Alligator, B is for Butterfly...
There were warm-ups and then Alphabet yoga for each letter, then another short set of standing poses after it. The kids kept up with the fast pace of it. It kept their interest and harnessed their energy too.

Most of their comments after were about how much they loved the animals. So they've really hit on a good topic. Some said it was a challenging set and they did have a nice, calm relaxation at the end.
When I asked for a show of hands - everyone showed that they liked it and would do the DVD again.
Kids Yoga is Playful
This video gives a good idea of the playfulness of kids yoga and I would recommend it to new teachers who don't have much experience with kids yoga to see the fast pace of a class compared to adult yoga. But watch the DVD first and then do it with the kids so you know what to expect.

For kids, I think it is great to do with supervision, but wouldn't leave the kids alone with the DVD the first time they did it. It was definitely a hit with my daycare class.

I'm always afraid to do crow with my kids until I've had them for almost the full eight weeks or those who have been with me a long time - and I don't do it with my toddlers at all. Holding a pose hmmm - as long as they will do it really! Not anywhere near as long as I'd like but this all comes in time doesn't it?
I'm the same, I do yoga with my own kids, my partner is a primary school teacher and he does it with his kids. Both of us are pretty relaxed with kids, they hold the pose for what feels right for them. We don't want to impose times on them because we want all of the kids to grow up loving yoga. Plus we find that they will gradually hold the poses longer as they begin to 'listen' to their bodies and really understand their muscles and how they work and understand the strength within themselves. :)
Agreed...I tend to take my cues from the kids (I teach preschoolers and younger) when it comes to how long we do a particular pose, game, song, or activity. Sometimes I let the kids lead the class after they've gotten to know the poses well!
